Extra, extra! Read all about our music therapy and drumming program at Atria Senior Living, a premier San Diego retirement community. We sing and play old time music, classical music, acoustic music, and world music, mixed with original song-writing, active music-making, and relaxation techniques in order to maintain physical strength and cordination, preserve cognitive skills, and provide opportunities for socialization. In addition, we bring instruments from around the world that residents play in a group.

The article was published in the hard copy San Diego Union Tribune on Thanksgiving Day, 2010. The article didn’t quite make the web! But here is the scanned copy. On Saturday, I presented Music-Making Strategies for Caregiver/Older Adult Interaction at the ICAA national conference. I was accompanied by John Fitzgerald of Remo and Mary Tolena. The purpose of the presentation was to empower the retirement community workforce to make music in a supportive and nurturing way with their clients. There were experiential, lecture and video components to the presentation.
